Cabrillo National Monument: San Diego’s Coastal Gem

Tammy Searle

History & Background
Cabrillo National Monument commemorates the landing of Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542, the first European explorer to set foot on the West Coast. Established in 1913, the monument sits atop Point Loma, offering stunning views of San Diego’s harbor and skyline. Beyond its historical significance, the site features military history exhibits, hiking trails, and natural tide pools, creating a fascinating blend of culture and nature.

Highlights & What to See
The monument itself stands proudly overlooking the Pacific, accompanied by an informative visitor center. History buffs enjoy the exhibits about Cabrillo’s journey, while military enthusiasts can explore remnants of World War II bunkers. The Old Point Loma Lighthouse, built in 1855, is another highlight. On clear days, visitors can spot whales migrating offshore or watch Navy ships entering the harbor. The tide pools at the base of the cliffs reveal starfish, crabs, and sea anemones — a magical experience for kids and adults alike.

Best Tips & When to Visit
Visit in the morning for the best visibility and smaller crowds. Wear comfortable shoes for walking trails and exploring tide pools. Winter is prime time for whale watching, while low tides offer the best tide-pooling opportunities. Bring binoculars for spotting wildlife and a picnic to enjoy at one of the scenic overlooks. Entry is covered by a small National Park fee, which also supports site preservation.

Family & Solo Travel Notes
Families find Cabrillo engaging because it combines history lessons with outdoor adventure. Kids love climbing the lighthouse steps and peeking into tide pools. Solo travelers often enjoy the tranquility of the cliffs and the opportunity for stunning photography. It’s a place that balances learning and leisure beautifully.

Accessibility Info
The Visitor Center, monument grounds, and main viewpoints are wheelchair accessible. Accessible parking and restrooms are available, and paved pathways make it easy to navigate key areas. The lighthouse has stairs, but exhibits are available at ground level. Tidepool access can be tricky for wheelchairs, but nearby overlooks still offer spectacular coastal views.
