🐠 San Diego’s Birch Aquarium: Ocean Fun & Learning

Tammy Searle

History & Background
The Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla has been inspiring visitors since 1903, with the current facility opening in 1992. As part of UC San Diego, it serves as both a public aquarium and an educational extension of one of the world’s leading oceanographic institutions. Its mission is to connect people to the ocean and advance understanding of marine science.

Highlights & What to See
The aquarium features more than 60 habitats with seahorses, sharks, coral reefs, and interactive tide pools. The “Hall of Fishes” showcases Pacific marine life, while exhibits on climate change and deep-sea exploration provide educational depth. Outside, the Tide-Pool Plaza offers hands-on experiences with starfish and sea cucumbers, plus panoramic views of La Jolla Shores.

Best Tips & When to Visit
Arrive in the morning for smaller crowds, especially during weekends and school breaks. Bring a camera for the outdoor decks, which offer some of the best coastal views in San Diego. Parking is free and convenient. Check the schedule for feeding times and special programs to maximize your visit.

Family & Solo Travel Notes
Families love the touch tanks and kid-friendly exhibits that make science fun and approachable. Parents appreciate the manageable size of the aquarium — big enough to be engaging, but small enough not to overwhelm. Solo travelers will find it a peaceful and inspiring spot, perfect for learning or sketching marine life. It’s also a photographer’s dream with its colorful tanks and ocean views.

Accessibility Info
The aquarium is fully accessible, with ramps, elevators, and accessible restrooms. Wheelchairs are available free of charge. Interactive exhibits are designed with inclusivity in mind, making the experience engaging for all. With its thoughtful design, Birch Aquarium ensures the ocean is accessible to everyone
